Every pallet face bounces signal with its own timing, so the load defines the trailer's echo pattern. If a pallet slides even twenty centimeters, its echo timing changes measurably. Empty space echoes longer, so the same reading also estimates how full the trailer is at every stop.

In the physics: Cargo defines the multipath skeleton of the trailer cavity: each pallet face is a reflector with a specific path delay. A 20cm pallet shift changes specific CIR tap delays by ~1.3ns and re-weights amplitudes; empty volume shows as long-delay reverberant taps. Fill fraction maps monotonically to RMS delay spread.
