The bee cluster is a dense living ball that shifts the signal around it as it grows, shrinks, and moves. Before swarming, the whole colony gets agitated, and the ripple gets busier. So you learn cluster size and colony mood through the hive wall — without chilling the brood.

In the physics: The bee cluster is a dense, moving dielectric mass whose size and position shift the near-field scattering geometry; pre-swarm agitation and 'buzzing runs' add broadband low-frequency body-motion micro-Doppler within the 0.1-40Hz band even though individual wingbeats (~200Hz) alias out. Cluster shrinkage over winter is a direct occupancy-volume change.

Own-hardware: ESP32 pair on hive walls vs hive-scale weight logger, in-hive thermistors and inspection records across a season; no public bee dataset exists, so this is a bespoke frontier build validated against hive-scale weight and swarm-event logs.
